Summer Pet Care Tips

Summer has finally arrived! While we all look forward to beach trips, backyard barbecues, and fun road trips, we can't forget our responsibility as pet parents to make sure our fur babies are ok despite the summer heat. Here are some tips to make sure your pet will enjoy this summer season.

Water Everywhere

Make sure to leave out plenty of fresh water in accessible, shaded areas. Best to leave multiple bowls out just in case one accidentally tips over. Also, even if there seems to be a lot of water, make sure to replenish it with a fresh batch everyday since pets tend to avoid stale water.

Exercise Time and Tips

When it's time to bring your pet out to play or go on a walk, do it either early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the heat. Pro tip: touch the pavement or road before a walk. Is it still hot to touch? It's also too hot for your pets to walk outside.

Keep Bugs Away

It is usually during the summer season that ticks and fleas come out of hiding. Aside from using safe shampoos to prevent ticks and fleas from crawling and biting your pets, best to also keep the environment clean so they won't enter your home. Cut grass short to reduce the presence of pests and use non-toxic cleaners such as those that are Citronella, Neem, or Lavender based that are known to repel creepy crawlies.

Stay Indoors

Even if your pet usually stays outdoors, you may want to consider making him or her stay inside your home especially during the peak hours. If you can find a spot where the flooring is made of tiles, that would be the best since tiles are quite cool to the touch. Is your pet too big to stay inside? Make sure they have a cool, shaded area they can rest in with lots of ventilation.
